Project Description:

This project was created because of a desire by both Griffith University and QUT libraries to have a mechanism to direct clients to valuable information resources on the Internet.

At the inception of the project, both institutions had web interfaces to catalogues, and were including records for Internet resources to varying extents. Library catalogues are considered an appropriate place to store Internet records, because this approach allows (inter-alia) for integration of Internet resources with the rest of the libraries' collections, and for storing records in a standard format which will be easily convertible to other formats at a future time.

The focus of the Internet Resources Project has been to develop a mechanism whereby Liaison Librarians can prepare Internet resources in a brief cataloguing format (based on, and compatible with existing resource description standards) for uploading to library catalogues. Under this approach, Liaison Librarians will also have the opportunity to flag records for upgrading to full cataloguing standards.

Project History

31.12.01

Guidelines have been developed for selection and input of internet resources; as well as a webform (and associated programming) which will load these resources into Library catalogues. Process and workflow issues are presently being examined.

Current Project Status:

31.3.02

Implementation will commence from 2 April 2002, when the new program and formats will be used in both institutions for collection and input of records relating to internet based library resources.
